The only fiber processing unit in Khowai faces shutdown
The lone fiber processing unit in the state is virtually on the verge of shutdown. In fact this unit at west Champachera ADC village under Tulashikhar R.D. Block has been shut down since long.
But situation was far better when it got started on 3 September, 2006. Shri Samir Deb Sarkar, local MLA inaugurated this unit generating great hope especially in terms of employment generation.
The fiber processing unit using locally available pineapple leaf and banana stem was set up with the help of The South India Textile Research Agency (SITRA) based in Coimbaatore in Tamilnadu.
At least 13 villagers from the locality were trained in Uttar Pradesh for one month. But all in vein. After some years of smooth running, the unit collapsed. Acute financial constraint may be the reason. Can not the state government take some effective steps to save the unit from collapse, asked a senior villager.
