An assault on life was carried out on Pradesh Congress president - Sudip Roy Barman, Pradesh Youth Congress president – Sushanta Choudhury and NSUI state president Vikki Prasad today. Though the incident was claimed to be result of brake failure of sand-loaded lorry which smashed two cars having the leaders within in front of the Congress party office at Bairagibazaar, Congress has alleged that the incident is suspected to be a hit-and-run attempt.
Speaking to reporters at Pradesh Congress Bhawan here this evening, Congress spokesperson Ratan Chakraborty, Dr. Ashok Sinha and former MLA Tapas Dey said that the Congress and party frontal wing leaders were moving for party campaign at Nalchar for the by-election. They were waiting in front of the Congress party office at Bairagibazaar under Melagarh police station when a sand-loaded truck (TR01-C-1707) dashed the cars from behind at a speed of about 70 Kmph. All three leaders have received injuries on their person while driver of the car carrying the Youth Congress president and NSUI state chief (TR01-V-0407) was reported to have got serious head injuries.
The Opposition has demanded a high-level investigation from the government to figure out real motives behind the incident. “Onlookers have expressed suspicion that the incident was not some brake failure issue at all. The driver of the assailant truck, who was arrested alongwith his vehicle later today, drove the truck till the police station and nobody found any brake failure hassles. Such hit-and-run incidents are not new in the state politics and so, should be strongly dealt with”, said Chakraborty.
